| Definition The property crime rate is the total number of property crimes reported per 1000 population. Property Crimes are defined as violent offenses against property, including burglary, larceny, motor vehicle theft, arson, transportation of stolen property, and other property offenses (destruction of property and trespassing). |

| Importance Crime rates are an indicator of the safety of a community and its quality of life. Many crimes go unreported and many are not resolved with an arrest.
