History

Settlement of the Dixwell neighborhood began in the 1700s, as the area was within close proximity to the center of New Haven and the Yale University campus. The opening of the Farmington Canal in the 1820s, which began Downtown, and ran through Dixwell on its path north to Northampton, Massachusetts, provided an additional impetus for settlement of the area, particularly after its conversion to a railroad line in the 1840s made the district a convenient place for industry. A series of small scale industrial developments in the area paved the way for the Winchester Repeating Arms Factory, which moved to New Haven in the 1870s and rapidly expanded in ensuing decades, eventually employing 25,000 local residents within over 40 buildings.

Note: Please include additional historical information here - interesting that there are relatively few online resources about even the more famous of New Haven's neighborhoods!

The Yale Police Department relocated its headquarters to the neighborhood in 2005, adjacent to the newly-created Scantlebury Park. The university's two new proposed residential colleges and University Health Services building will be located in the area as well.

Known as a "Greenway," the Farmington Canal has been converted into a paved walking and bicycling path and linear park between New Haven and Northampton, with the majority of the trail within Connecticut now completed.
