Resources: Technology and Competitiveness
1. CT Tech Council Report: Connecticut Competitiveness Agenda Project, by Casey Pickett and Matthew Nemerson. "December 16, 2010: A six-month study by the Connecticut Technology Council (CTC) to determine Connecticut’s competitive position as a location for hi-tech firms with high jobs growth reveals the state is in danger of losing these critical contributors to economic growth. The study, timed to be of assistance to the new Governor’s economic development team, combines interviews with CEOs of fast-growing firms and research on where jobs are coming from to provide key steps to keep top entrepreneurs and tech-oriented firms planted here. The study suggests why the state, despite many resources, has lagged the nation in new business start-ups and net job creation over the past decade." Resources: Family Budget Calculators
1. Family Budget Calculator at Economic Policy Institute: EPI’s Family Budget Calculator compiles the costs of essentials such as housing, food, child care, transportation and health care in different regions of the country to provide an estimate of how much families need to get by. While the U.S. Census Bureau in the 1960s developed a methodology for calculating poverty thresholds, that system has not been updated to reflect changes in the economy over the last 50 years, such as significantly higher health care costs. As a result, it often underestimates the actual amount a working family needs to cover essentials. Unlike the official poverty threshold, which is the same nationwide, the Family Budget Calculator provides estimates of costs by state, city, metropolitan or rural area. In some cases it shows families need more than twice the amount of the official poverty thresholds to pay for food, housing and other essentials. http://www.epi.org/content/budget_calculator/
