This document is the successful Waterbury, CT FY 2014 TIGER Capital Project Grant Application, submitted by the City of Waterbury. The project is now underway.

Azavea, a nationally-prominent geospatial analysis (GIS) firm, has selected students from The University of Pennsylvania, Clark University, and Colgate University to each receive a $5,000 stipend to perform pro bono geospatial analysis work for non-profits over the summer.  The students were selected out of a pool of 125 student applications that came from all over the country. The program is sponsored by Azavea with additional financial support from Esri and The University of Pennsylvania’s School of Design.

This document presents data from the U.S. Census Bureau’s LEHD Origin-Destination Employment Statistics (LODES), a product of the Longitudinal Employer-Household Dynamics (LEHD) program. The LODES dataset combines wage records, employer reports, administrative and demographic information, and records from the U.S. Census Bureau. The most recent dataset was available for the year 2011. The LODES dataset offers an unprecedented level of geographic and demographic detail compared to other economic datasets.

[Excerpt]: "DataHaven also provides "technical assistance" for nonprofit and community groups in the New Haven area. Groups creating policy or writing grants can reach out to DataHaven with a problem or a question—for example, what is the income disparity among neighborhoods in a certain town?—and DataHaven will do its best to reply with some figures. "It’s like data matchmaking," says Abraham, laughing. It’s an especially important service for the smaller towns in the New Haven area, which don’t necessarily have the resources to gather the data on their own.

Excel Bridgeport is a movement of parents, students, and other community members to advocate for excellent schools. We believe that going to college and having successful careers should be the expectation and not the exception for Bridgeport children. To get there, we need to focus on 1) Achievement, 2) Good Governance, 3) Effective Leadership, & 4) Community Empowerment. This report provides a summary of 2013 student achievement data, in order to equip parents and community members to be informed advocates and suggest strategies for moving forward.
