DataHaven congratulates state agency partners including @ohs_ct on receiving $154M to improve health equity in rural communities. Key information sources used in the state’s application for this funding included DataHaven’s 2022 Rural Health in Connecticut assessment, produced with Connecticut State Office of Rural Health (available on the DataHaven website), as well as recent waves of the DataHaven Community Wellbeing Survey, which conducts in-depth interviews with randomly-selected adults across every #Connecticut town. #ruralhealth #nnip

Excerpt: "Income inequality in the state is expected to compound under the “One Big Beautiful Bill Act,” according to a new report that found that the legislation could cost the bottom 25% of #Connecticut families more than $148 million next year. According to the report, released this month by the nonprofit DataHaven, New London, Norwich, Putnam and Killingly are among 20 towns where low-income families are expected to be hit the hardest by reductions in Medicaid, SNAP and other benefits in the new legislation.... At the same time that families in the bottom quartile are expected to see their income diminish, the report estimated that the highest-earning households in the state’s top 25% will gain more than $3.38 billion in tax relief from the legislation." DataHaven's statewide survey results reveal how @united4alice estimates compare to lived experience at the town level across #Connecticut. The graphics in this post compare the percent of adults who say they are financially insecure ("just getting by" or "finding it difficult") in the DataHaven Community Wellbeing Survey (DCWS) to the percent of ALICE and poverty households from the most recent ALICE report.

#ALICE stands for Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed - representing working families that are above the poverty line, but still struggling to pay for basic needs. In this case, the charts combine the ALICE rate and poverty rate to show everyone who is below the ALICE threshold (on the x-axis). The scatterplots compare that to the percent of adults who are financially insecure in the DCWS data (on the y-axis).

The DCWS data are based on interviews with about 50,000 randomly-selected adults across every CT town (using question wording derived from a federal survey on financial insecurity). The ALICE estimates are based largely on income data from the U.S. Census American Community Survey, collected over 5 years from 2019 through 2023, compared to the cost of basic necessities such as housing, food, health care, and transportation in the area.
