Report: Ansonia and Derby fall further behind Valley neighbors

And although the two cities are frequent rivals when it comes to everything from economic development to high school football, they also share a common problem — poverty. The two cities trail the state and the rest of the lower Naugatuck Valley communities in median income. And the gap is widening.

Race, Economics, Environment Continue To Drive State’s Asthma Disparities

[Excerpt of feature article by Erik Ofgang, which appeared in C-HIT as well as in major newspapers like the Hartford Courant] Kamyle Dunn used to sleep with her hand resting on her mother’s chest so she could feel it expand and contract and know that her mom hadn’t stopped breathing during the night. Dunn’s mother, Maria Cotto, has long had severe asthma. Dunn inherited the condition, though she has mostly grown out of it as an adult. Now, Dunn’s 12-year-old son also has severe asthma.
